ShetkaStone History

ShetkaStone started as a college term paper, or as a way to avoid writing one, anyway. Our founder, Stanley Shetka, was enrolled in an art history class at the University of Minnesota when he made the first ShetkaStone prototype—an art history book he’d pulped in a washing machine, molded into a brick, and handed in to his professor on the final day of class. “What’s this?” the professor asked. “It’s my term paper,” Stan said, and explained that everything he’d read that semester was contained within the brick. It was a gutsy move, but it paid off: the professor gave him an A.

We’ve grown a lot since those days, as our product has evolved from an academic gamble to a high-end building product. Today, ShetkaStone is one of the smartest and most sustainable architectural surfaces available, a great choice for all kinds of projects. We haven’t lost sight of our roots, though. For one, we still hate writing term papers. We’re also as passionate as ever about finding creative, environmentally responsible ways to remove paper from the waste stream and recycle it into beautiful, useful products.
